The article uses the data by Rosstat, materials of the official website of the Central Federal District, the official sites of regions within the Central Federal District, the official sites of national and international hotel operators. The article discusses the state of development of hotel business in the Central Federal District. The authors points out the main kinds of tourism (pilgrimage, ethnic, photo, gastronomic, educational, literary, musical, individual, group, business, cultural) and the main attractions in each of the regions of the Central Federal District. The author also comes up with some indicators of collective accommodation facilities in the Russian Federation and the Central Federal District and a list of Russian (Amax, Best Eastern, Geliopark and Azimuth) and international (HAYATT, Accor, IHG, Hilton, Carlson Rezidor, Marriott) hotel operators. The paper considers the examples of innovations introduced in the material base of Russian and foreign hotel chains in the Central Federal District, SWOT-analysis of the hotel industry in the CFA, revealing the strengths and weaknesses of the industry, as well as opportunities and threats. The strengths of the hotel business CFD include: support from the government, a large number of ongoing cultural events and the presence of a large number of tourist attractions. Weaknesses are the shortage of budget hotels, poorly developed tourist infrastructure, poor road infrastructure, no stable climate throughout the year and, therefore, the need to develop different types of tourism. Among opportunities of the hotel industry in CFD is the capital status of the district, which increases the flow of Russian tourists. Rising euro and dollar, the political situation around Ukraine and the sharp outflow of investors caused by it reduce the flow of foreign tourists, posing the threat to development of hotel business in the area. The authors conclude that the Central Federal District has a number of problems associated with hotel sales but despite this issues the prospects of building of new hotels are also quite good.
