The article identifies the relevance of demographic processes in modem Russia. The main trend of demographic development of the rural territories of the Republic of Mordovia is the declining rural population. The article evaluates the causes of the decline of the rural population in the Republic: the decline in the birth rate, high mortality and ageing of the population due to the low standard of living of the population in rural areas, greater decrease of its size as compared to urban areas. The article determines the causes of migration from the countryside in the Republic of Mordovia. On the basis of the analysis assessed the health status of the population in the Republic. A regressive age structure of the rural population, which is characterized by an excess of the older population over the proportion of children, leads to a decrease in economic and reproductive activity of the population that does not serve the interests of sustainable development of agrarian sector of the region and the country as a whole. To improve the demographic situation in rural areas of the Republic of Mordovia, the author proposes the following: reducing the migration of rural youth to urban and young personnel us village, expanding the birth rates and support for many children; developing the health care.
